Tragedy stuck today when Morris Park attorney William J. Madonna, Esq., “Will” as some friends called him, was found dead in his home. The cause of death, although unconfirmed, is believed to be a massive heart attack.

Since 1994, William Madonna maintained a successful private practice in the Morris Park section of the Bronx. He represented victims of domestic violence, as well as handled divorce and family law, criminal law and real estate. Madonna was a member of the Bronx County Bar Association and the Bronx Family Court Bar Association. He also served as chief counsel to local assemblyman Mark Gjonaj.

“Bill Madonna was a neighborhood icon,a great lawyer, a good neighbor and a friend. He will be missed,” said Bronx Chronicle publisher Sal Conforto.

Assemblyman Gjonaj said the loss of his friend was very painful.  “Big loss to me and so many others.”

William J. Madonna began his legal career in the office of the Corporation Counsel of the City of New York Law Department as a Senior Legal Specialist. In 1990 Mr. Madonna joined the Office of the Bronx District Attorney Robert Johnson, as a prosecutor handling major criminal investigations and prosecutions.

He earned his Bachelor of Science from Northeastern University in Boston, Massachusetts. Mr. Madonna later then graduated from the New England School of Law, Boston, Massachusetts.

One of his high-profile cases involved representing David W. Johnson, an aide to then-Gov. David Paterson, who was accused of domestic violence back in 2010.

In 2012, Madonna was retained by then-state Assembly candidate Mark Gjonaj to represent the Tracey Towers tenant organization in their fight to block rent increases.
