A police officer was shot and mortally wounded inside a marked NYPD temporary command center, shot through a window by a gunman on the street.

According to officials, the command center had been parked at the corner of East 183 Street and Morris Avenue, when the officer was shot at 12:30 a.m. on Wednesday, July 5.

NYPD Commissioner James O’Neil told reporters at St. Barnabas Hospital, “A female police officer was shot and critically injured while sitting in a marked NYPD command vehicle.”

O’Neil continued, “when a suspect fired through the vehicle’s window striking her in the head. Her partner immediately radioed for assistance.”

Officials say the suspect fled from the scene and was confronted a block away by a two-man anti-crime unit, the suspect produced a handgun and the officers fired on the suspect, striking and killing him.

A silver five-shot Ruger handgun was recovered at the scene.

The gunman was later identified as Alexander Bonds, 34, of Rev. James A. Polite Avenue, who had served time for selling drugs near a school and robbery.

An unidentified civilian on the street was also wounded by the gunfire, but expected to survive.

In concluding his statement, issued before the police officer succumbed to her injuries, O’Neil added, “It is clear that it was an unprovoked direct attack on police officers who were assigned to keep people of this city safe.”

Officer Miosotis Familia, 48, died at St. Barnabas Hospital nearly three hours after being shot. Familia was a 12-year member of the department and was assigned to the 46th Precinct street crime unit.
