With over 50 million Hispanic people in the United States, and only 48% planning on pursuing a higher education (according to the Pew Research Center in 2009), it is imperative that Hispanic students are lifted up, accepted, and supported fully by universities across the United States. All students are important, but with 74% of Hispanic students cutting their education short for reasons such as supporting their family, and over half citing poor English — these students deserve to know there is an environment that will meet their needs.

The number one school for Hispanic students is University of California Santa Cruz (Santa Cruz, CA), and a number of schools which made the ranks are in California and Texas, where higher concentrations of the population are Hispanic.

Colleges in the Bronx made the list as well. Twenty-seventh-ranked College of Mount Saint Vincent, a Catholic liberal arts college in the Riverdale section of the Bronx, was the highest ranked local school in the Top 50 listing. CUNY’s Herbert Lehman College on Bedford Park Boulevard was ranked at No. 32. And at No. 48 is Boricua College, an independent, private, not-for-profit liberal arts and science college, which recently opened a Bronx campus in addition to its Manhattan and Brooklyn locations. Boricua College was the first private four-year bilingual institution of higher education learning on the United States mainland developed by Puerto Ricans and other Latinos.

Online programs are accessible from all across the country, but the safety net of the campus nearby is a wonderful addition to the flexibility, customization, and support received from these schools rigorous online programs.

Higher education researcher Brandon Carter, a firm believer in access to education for all Americans, ranked these colleges using criteria of retention rates and graduation rates, with each school being hand selected and reviewed for prospective students.
