Chairman Crowley Announces Winner of 2017 Art Competition for New York’s 14th Congressional District
(Queens, N.Y.) – Today, Rep. Joe Crowley (D-Queens, the Bronx), chairman of the Democratic Caucus, announced the winner of the 2017 Congressional Art Competition for New York’s 14th Congressional District. Jackson Heights resident Emily Fabrizi, a senior at St. John’s Preparatory School, won first place for her digital painting “Searching for Serenity.” Emily’s work is included in an exhibit featuring the winning pieces from around the country, which are being displayed at the U.S. Capitol for a year.
“The Congressional Art Competition is always an exciting time. There’s so much talent in the youth of our district, and this competition allows me to catch a glimpse of it,” said Chairman Crowley, an ardent supporter of the arts. “Emily took advantage of the digital tools available to illustrate a piece full of intrigue and introspection. There’s no doubt she has a bright future ahead of her. I thank all of the students who applied to this year’s competition – I’m so proud of each and every one of them.”
Inspired by Harlem Renaissance poetry, Emily explained her painting depicts a man representing comfort and safety, soothing a man who is shadowed in darkness. The painting was made using Adobe Photoshop and other digital art techniques.
The Congressional Art Competition is a nationwide high school art competition that provides an opportunity for Members of Congress to encourage and recognize artistic talents of their young constituents. More than 650,000 high school students nationwide have participated in the competition since 1982.
