On Aug. 19th, 2pm-6pm, SISFI, The Suicide Institute, NYC Suicide Council, NY Human Suffering and Wellness Coalition “NYHSWC” and The Bronx Opioid Awareness and Response Team are conducting another Suicide and Opioid Community Awareness Outreach Day at the corner of White Plains Road and 233rd Street in The Bronx. Our Community Awareness Outreach Days are held across the city to meet people in open public places to share information, education, resources and support about Emotional Pain, Addiction, Depression, Trauma and Suicide so as to create safe places and ways for them to open up and seek help without judgement, prejudice or bias. There are many myths and stigmas about suicide and depression that people are not aware of nor understand, and we are here to help destigmatize them with knowledge, experience and resources. We have seen an increase in completed suicides, depression and self-medication cases in the Bronx, and we anticipate a very challenging school year ahead.

There are many people who hear the word “opioid” but don’t know what it means nor what they are. Most people think it’s just heroin, but it’s more than that and in more This doesn’t help the fact that we have an opioid epidemic on our hands and need to effectively address it as so many lives are affected by it. For us to truly make an effective impact on the suicide, depression and opioid epidemic, we have to bring the conversation and awareness out on the street and meet people where they are. There will be various informational hand-outs on the topics as well as our team of crisis responders, suicide survivors, mental health practitioners, clergy leaders and advocates ready and able to engage with people in dialog and support. Suicide and Depression are faceless enigmas that affects more people that you know because it’s very well masked and hidden. You never know who is hurting these days, and how the hurt is manifesting in self-harming, self-medicating, self-destructive, life-threatening and painful ways. If you see us, stop by and say hi, and support the cause. The more of us together the better the effort and greater the impacts.

Join us and be a part of the effort of raising awareness and creating safe places and dialog for people to express their pain before losing or giving up their life. We look forward to having you with us.
