Chairman Crowley Urges Censure of President Trump Over Support of White Supremacists
(Washington, D.C.) – House Democratic Caucus Chairman Joe Crowley (D-NY) is urging Congress to censure President Trump for his failure to condemn the white supremacists responsible for the domestic terrorism attacks in Charlottesville, Virginia.
“The president’s refusal to clearly condemn the acts of domestic terrorism in Charlottesville by white nationalists, neo-Nazis, and other hate-filled groups is appalling,” Chairman Crowley said. “President Trump has disgraced the Office of the Presidency with his support of these un-American organizations, and it is incumbent on Congress to reject his hateful rhetoric and policies.”
A congressional censure amounts to a formal rebuke of a president for actions beneath the dignity of the Office of the Presidency. Only three presidents have been censured by either the House or Senate.
“Republicans and Democrats must speak with one voice on this issue. Censuring President Trump for his support of hate groups would send an unequivocal message that Congress will not stand idly by while white nationalists and neo-Nazis threaten our American values,” Chairman Crowley said.
Chairman Crowley is an original co-sponsor of a resolution, introduced by Reps. Jerrold Nadler (D-NY), Bonnie Watson Coleman (D-NJ), and Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash.), calling for an official congressional censure.
