Health & Wellness for Bronx Children

Senator Jeff Klein is delivering health and wellness to the children of The Bronx and all of New York State now that Governor Andrew Cuomo has signed his legislation into law allowing schools to screen for childhood obesity.

The legislation, co-sponsored by Assemblyman Marcos Crespo in the State Assembly, also includes diabetes risk analyses during health exams and creates school district nutrition advisory committees, which will make recommendations on nutritional practices and on educational information for parents and guardians. In addition to obesity, information on other diseases such as asthma, chronic bronchitis and respiratory diseases will be included to stop the alarming trends seen in The Bronx.

Students will be educated on the risks of diabetes, which is a rapidly growing problem in the United States, by incorporating health education, including the importance of a healthy diet, into their usual biology and chemistry classes.

The legislation received the praise of advocates dedicated to the cause of helping children live healthier lives, including the New York State Association of County Health Officials and the Alliance of New York State YMCA’s.
