The Bronx Chronicle Endorses Gjonaj for City Council

This summer has seen a very spirited fight for the Democratic nomination for City Council in District 13 which covers Morris Park, Throgs Neck and City Island. Term-limited Councilman James Vacca has served his community well. But now it’s time for new blood to represent the East Bronx in the New York City Council.

Most of the candidates who made the September 12th ballot are exceptional leaders. Young leaders like John Doyle and Marjorie Velazquez have outstanding qualities and therefore have a future in politics and government. We urge them to stay involved no matter the outcome in Tuesday’s Democratic primary election.

Assemblyman Mark Gjonaj is our choice for City Council because he understands the needs of the residents of Throgs Neck, Morris Park and City Island and has used his position as a state lawmaker to be an advocate for the issues affecting the working people of the East Bronx. Opposing the overdevelopment of the district and the oversaturation of homeless and other supportive housing facilities demonstrates that he has the pulse of the community. Gjonaj’s quick response to the threat of Legionnaire’s Disease to vulnerable residents was laudable.

Assemblyman Mark Gjonaj’s accessibility to constituents and community leaders is unparalleled. Everyone in his East Bronx district knows who he is and how to reach him. Such accessibility is extremely important, admirable and needed in a City Council Member. Also, Gjonaj has the experience and judgement to fulfill that role.

For all of the above reasons, The Bronx Chronicle endorses Assemblyman Mark Gjonaj for the Democratic party designation in City Council District 13.

Polls will be open on Tuesday, September 12 for voters to cast their ballots from 6:00 AM to 9:00 PM.
