Chairman Crowley Statement on Senate Republicans’ Attack on Health Care

(Washington, D.C.) – House Democratic Caucus Chairman Joe Crowley (D-NY) issued the following statement on the devastating impacts of the Graham-Cassidy health care repeal bill:

“This is the worst version of Trumpcare congressional Republicans have put forward yet. It would fundamentally worsen health care in our country – putting at risk those with pre-existing conditions, seniors, and hardworking families. It is unbelievable Senate Republicans are considering voting on this bill without a thorough analysis of the current legislation from the Congressional Budget Office. Americans deserve answers on how many millions would lose their care before their elected representatives vote to strip them of that access.

“Repealing the Affordable Care Act has been a political obsession for Republicans for years, but Americans have clearly stated they believe a partisan, go-it-alone approach is not the way to fix health care problems in this country. When individuals in wheelchairs and with chronic health conditions are literally throwing themselves at your mercy, it’s clear there’s more at stake than just a political win.

“What’s worse, this latest attempt to pass the Graham-Cassidy bill comes as President Trump and his administration are doing everything within their power to undermine our health care system. The announcement that the main Affordable Care Act enrollment website will be shut down for large swaths of the open enrollment period is blatant sabotage, coming on top of massive funding cuts to programs that simply help people obtain health care. This so-called ‘system maintenance’ is nothing more than a political gambit to cut off access to care and should be thoroughly investigated by Congress.”
