Hugh Hefner “Comes Alive” at Yonkers Raceway
Nine-year-old gelding wins at Empire City Casino night after namesake’s passing
Yonkers, NY — Call this one truth is stranger than fiction. It turns out the reports of Hugh Hefner’s death were greatly exaggerated. No, we’re not horsin’ around, here. Hugh Hefner N., a nine-year-old pacer – on the outside “coming alive,”as track announcer John Hernan roared at the three-quarter mile mark – in the late stages of the seventh race at Yonkers Raceway last night (September 28) to score the victory in the $15,000-purse feature for $20,000 claimers.
The New Zealand-bred obviously didn’t read the obituaries.
In an obvious, if not ghoulish hunch play, Hugh Hefner N. delivered the goods for racing aficionados as the favorite to eek out a neck victory, timed in 1:55. On the night after his namesake’s passing, ‘Hef’ returned $4.60 for his third win in 20 seasonal starts.
The son of Falcon Seelster is a gelding, which, as raceway publicity director Frank Drucker mused, “somehow doesn’t seem right.” Leading driver Jason Bartlett, (pictured above), smiling in amazement as he crossed the finish line, was in the sulky for trainer Doug Dilloian Jr. and owner Keith Motusesky.
