Chairman Crowley Statement on House Democrats’ Effort to Force a Vote on the DREAM Act

(Washington, D.C.) – House Democratic Caucus Chairman Joe Crowley (D-NY) issued the following statement after signing a discharge petition to force a vote on the bipartisan, bicameral DREAM Act, legislation that would put the over 800,000 DREAMers in this country on a path to earn citizenship:

“The DREAM Act would pass today if House Republicans just had the courage to put the bill up for a vote. Democrats will not back down until DREAMers’ future in our country is secured, and this discharge petition will advance this fight.

“President Trump created this crisis when he ended the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program. I hope Republicans, many of whom have expressed empathy for the DREAMers, will join Democrats to fix this problem. America is watching what you do.”

If the discharge petition is signed by a majority of Members, the House would be forced to take a vote on this legislation, which would provide a permanent solution to allow young undocumented immigrants brought here as children to live in the United States legally.
