Hundreds of Bronxites greeted the 50,000 expected participants of this year’s New York City Marathon, held on Sunday, November 5. Two-time world champion Geoffrey Kamworor of Kenya won the race with a time of 2:10:56. Fellow Kenyan Wilson Kipsang was second, followed by Lelisa Desisa of Ethiopia. American Shalane Flanagan, 36, of Boulder, Colorado, became the first American woman to win the marathon since 1977. The NYPD deployed sharp-shooters along the route and heavy trucks were used to block intersections, protecting spectators and runners from any potential copy-cat attacks after Tuesday’s attack in lower Manhattan.
