Chairman Crowley Announces Winner of Fourth Annual Veterans Day Essay Contest for Students in Queens, the Bronx
(Washington, D.C) – Today, House Democratic Caucus Chairman Joe Crowley (D-NY), announced the winner of his annual Veterans Day essay competition for New York’s 14 Congressional District, which asks students to write about what it means to commemorate the holiday. Top honors went to Anastasia Tsakonas, a seventh-grader at I.S. 141 The Steinway School, whose essay placed first out of nearly 300 submissions. Crowley presented Tsakonas with a framed copy of her essay which was entered into the Congressional Record.
“As we pause each year to pay tribute to our veterans and their families, our annual essay competition gives our youth an opportunity to express their appreciation and a platform to share that gratitude beyond their dinner tables, classrooms, and communities,” said Crowley. “I’m always encouraged by the thoughtfulness and understanding these students have of the sacrifices made by our servicemembers. I congratulate Anastasia on her winning essay and the hundreds of others who participated in the contest.”
“Veterans Day is our reminder that we need to honor and celebrate all the men and women who have served or are currently serving in our military,” wrote Tsakonas in her essay. “It takes a lot of courage and strength to enter the military and purposely leave behind everything you love.”
The runners up for the contest are also students at I.S. 141. Seventh graders Zainab Hamid and Irena Marsalek both received certificates of congressional recognition for their efforts. Last year’s winning essay came from I.S. 61’s George Rivera from Corona.
Now in its fourth year, Crowley’s essay contest is open to every middle school student living in the 14th Congressional District.
