Statement from State Senator Gustavo Rivera on Package Directive 4911A

“I am very pleased that Governor Cuomo is directing the Department of Corrections to rescind Package Directive 4911A. This Directive would have resulted in only a handful of pre-approved vendors being able to deliver packages to incarcerated individuals, causing a significant financial burden for the family members of those incarcerated and severely restricting the types of items that could be sent to those inside, including reading materials and fresh produce. While I understand and respect that the Department of Corrections has a responsibility to safeguard the security of all correctional facilities, this misguided effort went beyond changes to simply prevent contraband and resulted in a punitive policy. I thank Governor Cuomo for his leadership on this issue and I look forward to continue working with his administration to ensure the safety of our correctional facilities, while protecting the rights of incarcerated individuals and their families.”
