Federal Court Grants Preliminary Injunction In DACA Case
On Tuesday, a federal judge granted Attorney General Eric Schneiderman and his fellow Attorneys General’s motion for a preliminary injunction blocking President Donald Trump’s order rescinding DACA. Schneiderman leads the coalition of 17 AGs that sued in September 2017 to defend DACA and protect DREAMers. Schneiderman called the federal court ruling “a victory for the over 42,000 New York Dreamers and more than 700,000 Dreamers across the country.” The Eastern District federal court heard arguments on Attorney General Schneiderman’s motion for preliminary injunction on January 30th, 2018.

Senate Votes to Move September Primary Election
The state Senate recently approved a measure that moves state and local primaries from Tuesday, September 11 to Thursday, September 13. In deference to the solemnity of the anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, the state primary was moved. This year, 9/11 would also fall on the last day of the Jewish holiday, Rosh Hashanah.

“Forcing New Yorkers to choose between voting and observing their faith is undemocratic, and I applaud the New York State Legislature for passing a bill to change the primary election date,” said Public Advocate Tish James.

Assembly Hearing to Investigate the Effects Gas and Oil Drilling Offshore
The state Assembly led by Speaker Carl Heastie will hold a public hearing to examine the impact of the proposed federal offshore natural gas and oil lease authorization on the state’s environment. On January 4, 2018, the United States Department of the Interior announced plans for the expansion of natural gas and oil drilling through the potential lease of acreage in federal offshore areas such as the Atlantic Region, which includes New York State. The hearing will be held today at 10:30 AM in Smithtown.
