Rep. Joe Crowley Impressed with Local Health Tech Innovation in Bronx Nursing Home

“We see the change in technology advancing everyday,” Rep. Joseph Crowley, Chairman of the Democratic Caucus, said yesterday during a visit to his district in the Bronx. Crowley wanted to see for himself how elderly lives were being transformed by a local technology & medical services startup, Call9.

On Wednesday, February 21st, Rep Joseph Crowley, visited Beth Abraham Center, the first Skilled Nursing Facility in Bronx to adopt Call9’s solution for eliminating unnecessary hospital trips for nursing home patients. Crowley met with Dr. Timothy C. Peck, Call9 cofounder and CEO, Moshe Blackstein, the administrator of Beth Abraham and nursing home residents. Beth Abraham is a member of the Centers Health Care family. Centers provides health care delivery to nearly every aspect of the post-acute health care continuum.

“Elderly patients who could—and should—be treated in their nursing home bed are transferred to the ED, worsening their condition and exacerbating the trauma of their acute event,” said Peck. Peck founded Call9 after years of experience as an Emergency Medicine physician. Call9 is a Silicon Valley-founded technology-enabled medical services company that delivers bedside emergency care in nursing homes via on-site first responders who are connected to remote emergency physicians via Call9’s technology platform.

“We take great pains to understand their wishes,” Peck told Crowley, “Hospitalizations that are unnecessary, are avoided,” said Peck, “because we can see patients, treat them by the bedside with hands of what is called the Clinical Care Specialist. They possess emergency skills that are required for the role.” Peck explains to Crowley.

“Together with Call9 we have been able to provide a new generation of quality care to a lot of patients here.” says Moshe Blackstein, the administrator of Beth Abraham.“The residents are eagerly and truly benefiting from [Call9]. It has been a great privilege and honor to have that partnership with Call9 and it really has helped us provide better quality outcomes for our residents here.”

Crowley met three patients who have benefited from Call9’s solution. In his hour-long visit, the Congressman opened doors for elderly residents, shook hands with numerous Beth Abe staffers and connected with the Call9 team. Crowley told News12 Bronx, “This is a new form of technology that helps save medicare, medicaid dollars and keeps people out of the hospital. Keeps them healthier and living longer. This is one of those tools that I think that is going to help move towards that.”
