Statement from State Senator Gustavo Rivera as Trump Implies Using Death Penalty on Drug Dealers
“It is abhorrent that Mr. Trump would suggest that our country should deal with the opioid crisis by imposing the death penalty on drug dealers. If history has taught us anything, it is that we are not going to solve this crisis by locking people up and increasing the death count. It is highly irresponsible and disturbing to have a person who occupies this office praising the policies of Philippine President Duterte, which have resulted in the killing of thousands of people and been denounced by human rights organizations across the world. As a country, we need to be vigilant about what policies this administration puts in place to deal with the opioid crisis. If we are really to stop this epidemic, and not compound it, we need to ensure that it is addressed as the public health matte that it is.”
