McDonald’s Restaurants Expect to Hire 9,000 in New York this Summer

Recent changes will expand employee access to McDonald’s education program

New York, NY – May 15, 2018 – With summer around the corner, McDonald’s Owner/Operators in New York expect to hire approximately 9,000 restaurant employees.

For job seekers who are also pursuing their education, McDonald’s offers a wide range of opportunities – now for more employees than ever before. McDonald’s recently announced that it is allocating $150 million over five years to its global Archways to Opportunity education program. The company will allocate these funds over the next five years to lower eligibility requirements from nine months to 90 days of employment and will drop weekly shift minimums from 20 hours to 15 hours, making new summer restaurant employees eligible by the end of the season.

This investment will provide nearly 400,000 U.S. restaurant employees with an opportunity to earn a high school diploma, receive upfront tuition assistance for college courses, access academic advising courses and learn English as a second language. Additionally, eligible crew will have access to $2,500 per year in tuition assistance, up from $700 per year and eligible managers will have access to $3,000 per year, up from $1,050.

“As McDonald’s franchisees, we are thrilled that more of our employees will now be able to take advantage of these education programs,” said Paul Hendel, a New York-based Owner/Operator and President of the New York Tri-State McDonald’s Owner/Operators Association. “Whether an employee chooses to stay with McDonald’s or move on to another chapter in their career, we are proud to offer educational assistance to help them reach that next step. It is all part of our ongoing commitment to being America’s best first job.

Since the program launched in 2015, more than 1,200 New York McDonald’s restaurant employees have been awarded nearly $1.4 million in tuition assistance. The latest changes to the program will allow many more employees to take advantage of the program.

Archways to Opportunity has awarded more than $21 million in high school and college tuition assistance as part of the company’s journey to build a better McDonald’s and set people up for success at McDonald’s and beyond. More than half of the hires at company-owned restaurants are projected to be between the ages of 16 to 24 years old, and for many, it is their first job.
