Newcomer Karines Reyes Announces for 87th Assembly District Vacancy

Reyes Announcement for 87th Assembly District Vacancy

By Robert Press

In what was another worse kept secret by the Bronx Democratic County organization, Karines Reyes announced her intention to run for the former assembly seat of Luis Sepulveda. Sepulveda became the new State Senator for the 32nd State Senate district after winning the special election on April 24.

Karines Reyes speaks after being introduced by Bronx Democratic county Leader Marcos Crespo.

Bronx Democratic County Leader Marcos Crespo, Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr., and several other elected officials and District Leaders were on hand for the official announcement at the Eve Lounge in the District.

Ms. Reyes, according to those who spoke, is an oncology nurse at Montefiore Hospital, who went to Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria, and is a dedicated union activist who is always looking out for her fellow hospital workers.

County leader Crespo claimed that after the assembly seat became vacant he sought candidates — and Ms. Reyes was the best candidate who came forth. While the vacancy didn’t occur until the end of April, Ms. Reyes was introduced by Crespo as the likely heir-apparent at the Bronx Democratic County organization’s Winter fundraiser in February. Crespo said today that the slate included the previous state committeewoman, although sources confirm that the committeewoman is running on a slate opposing Ms. Reyes.
