Last Monday evening, the Muslim Democratic Club of NY (MDCNY) hosted and welcomed gubernatorial candidate Cynthia Nixon to the Islamic Cultural Center of New York.

During the visit, Nixon greeted and interacted with diverse Muslim New Yorkers, observed prayers, participated in the Iftar dinner, and got to tour one of the oldest religious and cultural organizations uniting the Muslim community in New York City.

“We all know it’s an election year, and we know that there are those in Washington who will demonize the Muslim community in order to turn neighbor against neighbor, divide us up — just so they can win a few votes through making Americans fear each other,” Nixon said in her remarks at the event.

“You shouldn’t have to face this kind of bigotry. You shouldn’t have to face this intolerance. You shouldn’t have to face it. Not in New York. Not in America. Not in 2018. Not now, not ever. And I want you to know that we in New York have your back and we will stand with you.”

In more than seven years as governor of New York, Nixon’s opponent Gov. Andrew Cuomo hasn’t visited a mosque.

Cuomo’s office did not immediately respond to requests for comments from Mic. And no news reports of Cuomo visiting a mosque could be found. The New York governor’s official website and Flickr account did not show any record of visiting Muslim places of worship in the state.

A source, who requested anonymity for fear of angering the governor, told NBC News 4 that members of Cuomo’s senior staff were told by Muslims during a December 2015 meeting that the governor appeared to be avoiding visiting a mosque. Senior Cuomo aides assured the group that it would happen, but it never did, the source said.”

In the latest Siena poll, Cuomo continues to lead Nixon, 61-26 in the run-up to the September 13 Democratic primary.
