Statement from Bertha Lewis on Governor’s Committment to NYCHA

STATEMENT FROM BERTHA LEWIS
RE: Governor Cuomo’s Commitment to NYCHA
NEW YORK – “After the scathing reports on mismanagement and deceit within NYCHA, the City and Mayor de Blasio (former HUD Regional Director) will rightfully pay their dues to the residents of NYCHA by committing $1.2 billion, but it is now the state’s turn to cough up the money they have long promised. Governor Cuomo (former HUD Secretary) has sat on the $200 million he committed, denying public housing tenants the money they deserve. With the money set aside this year and last, that brings the total to $550 million. The Governor can no longer use the excuse that the money won’t be spent in a certain way now that a federal inspector will be brought in. Show us the money now! Black and minority voters should pay close attention this September. He may come to visit NYCHA buildings, claim to feel your pain, and give you promises, but he will not deliver when it comes down to it. Before session is over, sign the check and pay up, Governor Cuomo,” said Bertha Lewis, President and Founder of Black Leadership Action Coalition.
