Listen as History Comes Alive

LISTEN AS HISTORY COMES ALIVE

Does history repeat itself? Can history serve as inspiration? What leads community members to raise their voices for justice and social change? What inspires you?

Join SummerStage for a special series, produced in collaboration with the social justice organization VOICES of a People’s History of the United States, as hip hop artist Dres of Black Sheep (July 15), playwright Lemon Andersen (July 21), spoken word artist and actor muMs aka Craig Grant (August 4), and singer-songwriter Celisse Henderson(August 15) read from speeches, poems, and songs by Dr. Martin Luther King, Malcolm X, Maya Angelou, Nina Simone, Public Enemy, Angela Davis and others.

Following the readings, audiences will be invited to talk back and share their own motivations for action. This series will culminate in Central Park on August 28 with a full night of live readings, discussion, and music featuring actors Kerry Washington andViggo Mortensen, poet Staceyann Chin, and other special guests.

Together, SummerStage and Voices will use our city’s parks — the most fundamentally democratic of public spaces — as a backdrop to inspire new community connections.

Readings are scheduled one hour before a SummerStage concert in each location. Schedule can be found here.
