Singer, songwriter and audio engineer Stef Lebaux has lived in the East Bronx her whole life—except for a brief stint in the funky Los Feliz neighborhood of Los Angeles, where she wrote and recorded her first album, “Terrors.”
She’s now back home and will be representing Morris Park in the Battle of the Boroughs Talent Quest 2014, a citywide talent contest for “the best undiscovered performers across all genres” hosted by The Greene Space that is now in its fifth year.
Hundreds of bands and performers entered, but the organizers whittled the contestants down to just 12 for each borough. The winner representing Manhattan was chosen on February 7th, and the Queens standard-bearer on March 7th. Lebaux will be vying with 11 other Bronx-based performers to represent the borough on April 4th. Then it will be Staten Island’s turn on May 2nd and, finally, Brooklyn’s on June 6th.
The five performers left standing will meet in the Ultimate Battle on June 27th. The Grand Prize is a showcase appearance at the Apollo Theater.
Lebaux’s “indie electronic” style takes its inspiration from the 1990s trip hop genre, and her influences include Portishead, Massive Attack and Radiohead. In this video interview recorded with Glass, you can hear a sample of one of Lebaux’s songs, “Paper.”
