Dear Friend,

One week ago today, the Bronx suffered a terrible tragedy as a Metro North train was derailed, resulting in four deaths and many more serious injuries. In the aftermath of this accident, our thoughts and prayers are with all of those who have been touched by it. Our first responders have done a tremendous job combing through the wreckage, identifying passengers and treating the victims. Immediately following news of the Metro North train accident, I went to the site to survey the damage and speak to first responders and victims. Since then, I have been in contact with the MTA and Metro North throughout the recovery process and current investigation.

Safety is clearly a problem on this stretch of track, and we cannot afford to delay any important safety measures. Safety measures such as ensuring that every rail car in operation has an alerter system, would go a long way in preventing accidents like this one.

For the safety and confidence of all train passengers, crew members and their families, it is critical that all possible safety measures are assessed and implemented as soon as possible. I will continue to monitor the progress of this investigation, and fight for rapid adoption of measures that can prevent another incident like this from happening again. New York commuters deserve nothing less.

BRONX, NY – Last week I joined fourth grade students participating in an after school Robotics program that I helped to fund. The Robotics program is an initiative that enables students to build and program interactive robots using NXT Lego sensors, motors and Mindstorms software. At the announcement of the grant, PS 71 Principal Phyllis Calzolaio and program teachers joined us.

RIVERDALE, NY – It’s always a joy to spend time during Chanukah with family and friends like Rabbi Shamtov. I was honored to light the Riverdale Menorah at the bell tower monument on Henry Hudson Parkway on the fifth night, and I hope everyone throughout New York enjoyed a happy and healthy Chanukah.

BRONX, NY –  One of my favorite holiday traditions is the Westchester Square Christmas Tree Lighting. It was great to see so many families and familiar faces.

BRONX, NY – On Thursday, I was proud to honor Eagle Scout Philip Sepulveda for his service to our community. His Eagle service project involved Bartow Pelham Manor where a group of scouts and adults built a compost bin and cleared land for a park.

Sincerely,
