On January 30th, the Urban Poet Society, a new Bronx based literary organization, will be meeting at Bruckner Bar for its first gathering from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

The first book to be discussed is The Poor Among Us: A History of Family Poverty and Homelessness in New York City. The nonfiction work is authored by Ralph da Costa Nuñez, CEO of Homes for the Homeless, a major homeless services provider in the Bronx.

Charlie Samboy, the society’s organizer, is excited to offer something different and unique to Bronxites interested in the literary arts.

“This is not an ordinary book club. In fact, it’s not a book club,” said Samboy. “It’s a society. A meeting place of conscientious, driven, passionate individuals looking to make a lasting impact on their community through the most powerful weapon known to man: knowledge. We are not poets because we write poems, we are are poets because of the way in which we lead our lives with rhythmic harmony. ”
