Carbon Monoxide Leak at Long Island restaurant kills man and poisons 28

Fire personnel respond to a possible case of carbon monoxide poisoning  at the Legal Seafoods at the Walt Whitman Mall in Huntington, Saturday, Feb. 22, 2014. Police say a 55-year-old restaurant manager has died and more than two dozen others were taken to hospitals after being overcome by carbon monoxide at the New York mall. A Suffolk County police spokesman identified the man who died Saturday as Steven Nelson. Legal Sea Foods at the Walt Whitman Mall in Huntington Station suffered a fatal carbon monoxide leak, reportedly due to a faulty water heater flue pipe.  Carbon Monoxide had accumulated in the basement, poisoning restaurant manager Steven Nelson and another , later making its way up into the restaurant and poisoning patrons.

Victims were rushed to five area hospitals.  Nelson unfortunately died of a heart attack at Huntington Hospital.  All other victims are recovering.

The restaurant has been issued a citation for faulty equipment, which must be repaired before it can re-open.
