Council Member Andy King joined Jill Furillo, Executive Director at New York State Nurses Association and members of the NYSNA and 1199 SEIU Tuesday morning at North Central Bronx Hospital,  for a press conference, calling for North Central Bronx Hospital (NCBH) to reopen its labor and delivery unit on time and without any scheduling changes.

“Healthcare is a right, not a privilege,” cried King, as the crowd chanted: “The Bronx can’t wait! The Bronx can’t wait!”

The Health and Hospitals Corp. closed the inpatient labor and delivery services at NCBH on Aug. 12, 2013.  Locals have bemoaned the excessive wait times and overcrowded rooms at nearby hospitals, including Wakefield Campus of Montefiore Medical Center and Jacobi Hospital, and the closed services at NCBH are seen as one cause.

NCBH announced in November that it will reopen its labor unit in nine months. The State Department of Health has threatened to decertify beds at NCBH if the labor and delivery unit does not open by April 30, 2014.

Roughly 10 percent of the births in the borough were born each year at the NCBH unit.
