President Joan Cornell, Manor Past-Presidents Travel to Albany to Commemorate Centennial of Manor Club

ALBANY, NY – Senator Jeff Klein (D-Bronx/Westchester) honored the 100th Anniversary of Pelham Manor Club by passing a resolution on the floor of the State Senate in Albany. The Manor Club has long been a civic and cultural center for women in Pelham and Pelham Manor with a proud history of community service across New York. With more than 300 members, the Manor Club gives scholarships to Pelham Memorial High School students, organizes a service-focused youth group, hosts theater productions, concerts and holiday events.

Senator Klein said: “For one hundred years, the Pelham Manor Club has stood as a bedrock of the Pelham community, hosting countless cultural, social and civic events and providing a venue for outside philanthropic organizations. The Manor Club’s proud tradition of initiating and supporting community service programs is truly admirable. That’s why I was honored to recognize the 100th Anniversary of the Manor Club today on the floor of the New York State Senate today. Congratulations to the women of the Pelham Manor Club on their 100 year anniversary. Thank you for your ongoing commitment to your community.”

Pelham Manor Club President Joan Cornell said: “What a wonderful experience it was to witness this moving ceremony to commemorate the accomplishments of The Manor Club that started 100 years ago and are continuing and expanding today. On behalf of the past-presidents here with me today and our Board Members, we are most appreciative of the honor bestowed by the State Senate by issuing the beautifully worded resolution that looks back over our accomplishments and recognizes our importance to the future of Pelham.”

President Cornell was joined by Mary Hearle Past President and Chair of the Centennial Celebration and Past Manor Club Presidents, Sheila Rutigliano, Sharon Pietrzak, Claire Nappi and Constance Peters.

ALBANY, NY – Pelham Manor Club president Joan Cornell and Past Manor Club Presidents, Sheila Rutigliano, Sharon Pietrzak, Claire Nappi and Constance Peters, in addition to Mary Hearle Past President and Chair of the Centennial Celebration, joined Senator Klein in Albany as he passed a resolution in the State Senate honoring the Manor Club’s 100th Anniversary.

Incorporated in New York State in 1883, The Manor Club was founded by a group of prominent men “for social, musical, dramatic and literary purposes.”  In 1914, with The Club in debt and losing members, the men asked the wife of one of the members if she could recruit her friends to take over responsibilities of The Club, the running of its House (built in 1894) and assume its debt of $10,000.  Two weeks later, on February 26, 1914, Mary Grace Witherbee Black reported back to the Board of Directors and members and announced that she had the support of 147 women in Pelham. They all had agreed to take over the management of The Manor Club, the oversight of The Manor House and all the Club’s debt. The Board of Directors resigned, all men; and a new Board of all women was immediately elected.
