Alaska’s Iditarod sled-dog race begins

The famed Iditarod sled-dog started without a hitch, and will take its contestants through 1,000 miles of wilderness and icy conditions over the next week.

The traditional 11-mile jaunt through the state’s largest city has ceremoniously started the race, which commemorates a 1925 rescue mission that carried diphtheria serum to Nome by sled-dog relay.  The 69 sledders hail from as far as Jamaics and New Zealand
