On March 12, 2014 dozens of supporters gathered at City Hall as Council Member Fernando Cabrera and the New York City Council presented Proclamations to several Hip Hop ambassadors.

Tribute was paid to Afrika Bambaataa, Kurtis Blow, Grandmaster Melle Mel, Joe Conzo, Grand Wizard Theodore, Cutman LG, Rocky Bucano, Grandmaster Caz, Jorge Fabel Pabon and DJ Kool Herc. Pete DJ Jones received a posthumous Proclamation for his contributions of the culture of hip hop.

Highlighted was the creation of a hip hop museum. Council Member Cabrera expressed his desire to have it located with the Kingsbridge Armory. Additional support was expressed by Council Members Andy King and Jumaane Williams. While the community benefits agreement seeks to allocate over 50,000 square feet of community space, it must be divided by several organizations.

In a press release, Council Member Cabrera expressed, “There will be a process to allocate community space in the Kingsbridge Armory and the Community Advisory Council will make the final decision. I’m sure they will take serious consideration any proposal to have the Hip-Hop Museum located in the Kingsbridge Armory.”

Rocky Bucano, Media Relations for the Universal Hip Hop Museum, explained that the Museum is still in its infancy stage.

While there is no doubt that the museum should be located in the Bronx, the birth place of Hip Hop, and the Armory is an iconic destination, if the negotiations aren’t successful, the Hip Hop Museum rightfully deserves its own space in the Bronx. Hip Hop is an international billion million dollar industry which will attract folks from all around the world.

The Bronx Chronicle commits to bring up to date information regarding its developments.

Congratulations to all the Honorees!
