49th Precinct Council Meeting Last Night

At last night’s 49th Precinct Council meeting, Deputy Inspector Lorenzo Johnson stated that this year, crime was down overall in the precinct.  In the video below, details are given; he also gives an update on the March 12 incident that involved a body in a burning car ruled a homicide at this point.

The meeting was well attended and as the warm weather approaches, many residents spoke of concerns in an uptick in quality of life crimes outdoors, in addition to a focus on narcotics trafficking.

Among a number of other topics, he also spoke about the precinct’s recent effort to tackle auto theft and vandalism in the community, including the “bake car” initiative.  (See video below.)

A Bronx assistant district attorney was on hand to answer questions and hear concerns specifically on narcotics issues.

Council Members Jimmy Vacca and Ritchie Torres stopped by (video below)  (as well as representatives from the offices of Councilman Andy King and Senators Gustavo Rivera, Jeff Klein, Ruth Hassel-Thompson, Congressman Crowley and Assembly Member Mark Gjonaj, who all represent pieces of the 49th.)

Torres, who represents the Bronx Park East area north of the parkway,  spoke about issues at the Allerton Coops that were addressed at a local community meeting on Saturday. (See Chroncile coverage here.)

Sonny Vataj spoke on behalf of Assemblyman Mark Gjonaj on community concerns in the Pelham Parkway area and other updates on the Assemblyman’s current iniitiatves.
