Sleep Medicine Symposium at Montefiore May 12

2014-Sleep-Medicine-Save-the-Date

The recent catastrophic bus and train accidents in the Bronx have highlighted the importance of understanding the negative effects of sleep disruption among shift workers, especially those involved in positions of responsibility for public safety, including bus and train operators and healthcare workers.

The Sleep Symposium, sponsored by Montefiore Medical Center and the New York State Society of Sleep Medicine, will be held on Monday, May 12 from 1-6 pm at Montefiore. Its aim is to show how lack of sleep can affect health and to highlight the importance of sleep disruption on shift worker performance and productivity.  Interventions can be taken by employers and employees to mitigate the effects of sleep disruption by adjusting the shift workers’ environment and working conditions, and this can lead to improved public safety and patient care.

Speakers include renowned sleep experts from across the country, including Montefiore Medical Center, Albert Einstein College of Medicine, the National Transportation Safety Board, the University of Pennsylvania, Northwestern University Medical Center, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, and many others.
