Mt. St. Michael Mourns Loss Of Longtime Educator Joel Occhiuto, 72

Longtime Mount St. Michael teacher Joel Occhiuto passed away yesterday at the age of 72.  As a member of the 1959 graduating class and member of the faculty since 1965, his association with Mount goes back to 1955 when he entered the school as a Freshman.

Mount Saint Michael Academy announces with great sadness the death of Mr. Joel Occhiuto , a teacher of Spanish at the school for the past 49 years. During the course of his tenure at the Mount, Mr. Occhiuto served as teacher, Dean of Discipline, Department Chairperson, basketball coach, and mentor to new teachers.”
His survivors include his wife, Joy, their son Richard, his sister Elena (who is a Mount Faculty member) and his brother-in-law Robert (Mount ’71) and a host of friends. The Mount Community offers prayer, condolences and support to each of Mr. Occhiuto’s survivors.Funeral arrangements at this time are incomplete; once arrangements are finalized, they will be posted on the school website.

After graduating from the Mount in 1959, Mr. Occhiuto received a BA in Spanish from St. John’s University, Jamaica, NY and an MS in Psychologial Counseling from Lehman College, Bronx, NY. He was a member of the Foreign Language Department and currently teaches Advanced Placement Spanish, Spanish IV (Conversation/Culture), and Spanish II Honors. In addition to teaching, Mr. Occhiuto’s duties included Chairperson of the Foreign Language Department and Dean of Students twice in his career here at the Mount. Since 1978, he served as Principal of MSM Summer School Session.
