Assemblyman Mark Gjonaj Addresses Bullying Problem at Van Nest Academy with Bronx Hip-Hop Artist, W.R.A.T.H

BRONX, NEW YORK – On May 15, 2014, Assemblyman Mark Gjonaj visited the Van Nest Academy with Bronx Hip-Hop Artist W.R.A.T.H to address the bullying problem within the school.

Back in February when the Assemblyman visited VNA for his annual Black History Month Poster Contest, it was brought to his attention by the guidance counselor of the current problem with the children bullying each other in school and on the internet. Over the course of the next few months, Assemblyman Gjonaj became aquainted with Edwin Feliciano Jr., a Bronx born aspiring hip-hop artist, also known as W.R.A.T.H. (Writing Real and True Hip-Hop).

What makes W.R.A.T.H different for any other hip-hop artist is that he writes his non-profane lyrics based on true life influences and is an advocate for achieving goals and overcoming obstacles. As a victim of bullying as a child, he has started his own campaign against the act of bullying called “Stay Strong” and for children to disregard the put-downs and to never stop chasing their dreams. His message moved the Assemblyman Gjonaj and he invited W.R.A.T.H to join him in addressing the children at VNA with their own real-life experiences with bullying and a performance by W.R.A.T.H.

“Edwin was amazing. His story and message were inspiring. The students loved him and could certainly relate to his experiences. We are so happy Assemblyman Gjonaj brought Edwin to speak to the students” said Principal Carol Gilligan. Assemblyman Gjonaj stated, “W.R.A.T.H is a unique artist with a message that many can understand. I felt it was important to show the students a positive role model that has overcome their same problems and turned it into a goal driven career. I was honored to have him with me today.”
