Lehman College will celebrate the graduation of more than 2,800 students on Thursday, May 29 beginning at 10 a.m. on the South Athletic Field.

Letitia James, Public Advocate for the City of New York and a 1982 graduate of Lehman College, will deliver the commencement address. Ms. James is the first African-American woman to be elected to citywide office, succeeding Mayor Bill De Blasio in the Office of Public Advocate.

James, a native of Brooklyn, graduated from Lehman with a Bachelor of Arts in psychology and later earned a law degree from Howard University in Washington, DC. James went on to serve as Counsel and Chief of Staff to several members of the New York State Assembly and as a public defender for the Legal Aid Society. She was later appointed the first Assistant Attorney General in Charge of the Brooklyn Regional Office. In 2003, James was elected to the New York City Council on the Working Families Party’s ballot line – the first member of the party elected to office in New York State.

Lehman College will also confer honorary degrees upon Valerie Capers, musician and educator; Michael J. Balick, V.P. for Botanical Science and Director and Philecology Curator of the Institute of Economic Botany at the New York Botanical Garden; and William Aguado, former Executive Director of the Bronx Council on the Arts.

The 2014 Alumni Achievement Award is to be presented to Katina Rojas Joy, B.A. ’94, Deputy Director of the Business Liaison Office, U.S. Department of Commerce.

Marie Marianetti of the Department of History will be recognized as Teacher of the Year; Wilma Borrelli of the Department of Sociology will be recognized as Adjunct Teacher of the Year.
