Featured speakers/performers to include: Lucy Aponte of Poe Park, acclaimed storyteller Matthew Mercier, Charles Rice-Gonzalez of Bronx Academy of Arts and Dance and Lloyd Ultan of the Bronx County Historical Society; Bronx/Poe-inspired songs performed by musicians ABE of the Peace Poets, KFHox, Rob Rossi, and North Star of Division X; Dance by Chief 69 and the Bronx Boys Rocking Crew.

 

 

 

BRONX, NY JUNE 2014 — The Five Boro Story Project brings together notable Bronx historians, writers, singers, rappers, and dancers to present Bronx anthems and true stories, at “Back in the Day at Poe Park: A Bronx Storytelling and Music Festival.” This FREE event at Poe Park – located at 192nd Street & the Grand Concourse – will occur on the summer solstice as part of Make Music New York, an annual public music extravaganza.

 

 

 

WHAT:  “Back in the Day” is an outdoor summer festival that will take you on a journey through the Bronx from Edgar Allen Poe’s day to our day. Neighborhood stories will be interspersed with musical performances, including a musical rendition of Poe’s poem “Annabel Lee” and songs about the Bronx.  The program will conclude with an open forum inviting people in the audience to come to the mic and share stories, memories, music, and reflections on the Bronx. For all ages. In case of rain, the event will take place in the Poe Park Visitor Center.

 

 

 

WHO: Lucy Aponte, Director of the Poe Park Visitor Center; Matthew Mercier, writer, acclaimed storyteller and one time Poe Cottage caretaker; Charles Rice-Gonzalez, writer and co-founder of BAAD! The Bronx Academy of Arts and Dance; Lloyd Ultan, founding editor of The Bronx County Historical Society Journal.
