Women’s Housing and Economic Development Corporation (WHEDco) Receives $770,000 Grant from W.K. Kellogg Foundation

The Women’s Housing and Economic Development Corporation has recently received a $770,000 grant from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation for a major expansion of their successful Home-Based Childcare Training Institute. The partnership between WHEDco and the Kellogg Foundation marks a major national investment in early childhood education and economic advancement for women and children in the Bronx.

Twenty years ago, WHEDco established the Home-Based Childcare Training Institute to
transform women’s informal childcare work into paid positions as licensed home-based
childcare providers, while also improving the quality and availability of home-based childcare for low-income families in the Bronx.

To date, the Institute has provided training to more than 3,800 women to become licensed
childcare providers. Nearly 400 established childcare business owners are part of WHEDco’s professional network and link to referrals, researched-based education curriculum training, and a food program that reimburses them for the cost of healthy food served to children.
