South Bronx Firefighter is FDNY’s Calendar of Heroes’s First Female Star

danaemillsDanae Mines of the South Bronx’s Engine Co. 60 will be the first woman to be featured in the Official FDNY 2015 Calendar of Heroes,  now on sale at www.FDNYFoundation.org

Mills told the Daily News yesterday about her long road to her dream job:

“Her dreams of becoming a firefighter began when she was just 10 years old after one of the city’s Bravest visited her school to talk about the job.

But her family told her that she should consider another career, because only men joined the FDNY.

“I had absolutely no support from my family when I wanted to come on the job,” she said.

Mines became an EMT and, despite her family’s requests, accepted a promotion to become a firefighter in 2003. And she hasn’t been able to stop her relatives from gloating about her ever since.

“Once I graduated (from the Fire Academy), it was the complete opposite,” she said. “They could not stop bragging.”

Despite being one of 41 women firefighters in the department, Mines said she’s faced with no more challenges than any other man on the job.”

The FDNY 2015 Calendar of Heroes is the only official calendar of the New York City Fire Department.  All proceeds from the sale of the calendar go directly to the FDNY Foundation, the not-for-profit arm of the FDNY which was established to promote fire safety education for residents of New York City and to provide professional development, training and education for FDNY members.

Calendar photos were taken by premiere New York City nightlife photographer Patrick McMullan and feature 13 active FDNY Firefighters at firehouses and other locations across New York City.  Each month brings a fire safety message ensuring that each person who purchases the calendar can remain fire safe all year long.
