Vito Marcantonio’s Death with a Guided Walking Tour

at Woodlawn Cemetery

WHAT: Join VMF for this historic 2nd annual visit. The ceremony will be accompanied by dramatizations and a presentation by the foremost scholar on Vito Marcantonio, CUNY-Hostos CC’s Professor Gerald Meyer, author of Vito Marcantonio: Radical Politician 1902-1954.
• Roberto Ragone, Actor and Business/Cultural Consultant will provide a dramatization of Marcantonio including the Congressman’s eulogy for Fiorello LaGuardia
• Phillip Paschal, Actor, will perform Paul Robeson’s eulogy for Marcantonio
• Susan Olsen, Woodlawn Historian will lead the Walking tour
• Participants are invited to join VMF for an informal repast after the event.

After revisiting Vito Marcantonio, the seven-term, American Labor Party congressman from East Harlem’s legacy of civil, immigrant and labor rights, Susan Olsen will conduct a walking tour to the resting places of progressive political and cultural icons: Herman Melville, Elizabeth Stanton, Countee Cullen, Celia Cruz, Duke Ellington, Miles Davis, Augustus Julliard, Irving Berlin. Vito Marcantonio is buried next to his wife, Miriam Sanders, near his mentor, Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia.

WHERE: Woodlawn Cemetery, 517 Webster Ave. &East 233rd St, Bronx, NY; the last stop on the #4 train is a half block from Woodlawn Cemetery’s Gate House, our meeting point.
