Although hip-hop was started decades ago, the first International Hip Hop Parade celebrating the music phenomenon was held this past Saturday, August 23rd.

NY1’s Erin Clarke covered the festivities firsthand, and spoke of the perceived negativity that hindered an event like this from occurring in the past.

Duane “Spyder D” Hughes of the International Hip Hop Parade said, “Hip-hop started right here in the Bronx, and we wanted to finally do a parade because there’s always negativity when it comes to hip-hop.”

The crowd, albeit less than expected, enjoyed the peaceful passion of  sharing the music they love with the community.

Said one attendee, “Hip-hop is important, It’s in our culture. It’s what we listen to, what we enjoy.”

The parade was host to a number of organizations whose shared goals to bring hip hop history to the masses was recognized by attendees.

One attendee said, “Ten years from now, I’m going to say I was at the first one. It’s going to get bigger and bigger every year.”
