Expansion of speed cameras near schools as part of Vision Zero plan

Yesterday, Mayor Bill de Blasio, Senator Jeff Klein, and Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. announced the expansion of speed cameras near schools.

The announcement was made at P.S. 95 at the intersection of Sedgwick and Hillman Avenue in the Riverdale section. This area is considered a high-crash corridor by the Department of Transportation.

As part of the Mayor’s Vision Zero plan, 140 speed cameras are to be installed citywide over the next two years. The facts are clear—when drivers think they may get caught speeding, they slow down—and we know that even five miles an hour can make a difference in saving a life,” said Senate Jeff Klein at the press conference. Nearly one in three people killed in New York City traffic is killed by a speeding driver.

Since January 2014, the Department of Transportation has installed 20 cameras for the year, resulting in 183,000 violations being issued citywide.
