The Pathway to The American Dream

Councilwoman Vanessa Gibson has announced that she will be providing free immigration services in conjunction with CUNY at her district office which is located at 1377 Jerome Avenue. The phone number is 718-588-7500. This service will be available beginning October 24 on the second and fourth Friday of every month at least through June, 2015. This service is being made available through funds provided by the New York City Council. Councilwoman Gibson, the Bronx delegation in the NYC Council and the entire NYC Council has been very supportive of immigration reforms and working with and assisting immigrants residing in our great inclusive City.

Councilwoman Gibson is Chair of the NYC Council Committee on Public Safety. A graduate of SUNY Albany she went on to receiving a Masters in Public Administration from Baruch-CUNY. She began her governmental work as an intern to her predecessor Assemblywoman Aurelia Greene then to a member of the NYS Assembly in her own right and then to a leadership position as a member of the NYC Council. Her commitment is to the diverse population of our great Borough and City.

In an exclusive discussion Councilmember Gibson told this columnist and friend:

“The pathway to citizenship is a challenging journey for many who seek to achieve the American Dream. It is important to provide critical resources and services to those New Yorkers who desire to become citizens and this partnership with CUNY Citizenship NOW is a step of progress for many residents of the 16th Council District.

I am pleased to have a working relationship with CUNY Citizenship NOW as we have joined together throughout the years to host Immigration Forums in the Bronx. I am proud that the City Council has committed necessary funds to allow these programs to take place. Truly we know that while immigration is a federal matter, the process to obtain citizenship is arduous, lengthy and complicated. This program seeks to streamline the process and offer assistance to those who need help along the way. To many, the pathway to citizenship means hope, opportunity, stability and investment. It means that families have assimilated into America and become a part of our fabric and foundation. It is a desire that has been achieved. The desire of The American Dream!

CUNY Citizenship NOW will answer questions regarding Naturalization and Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals. All services are free and confidential and open to members of the community.

As a Council Member, it is my honor to be the voice for residents at City Hall and I believe this partnership will benefit many in a significant way. The 16th district is a diverse reflection of the Bronx and City and I remain committed to bringing stakeholders, community groups and services to the district to allow residents to truly achieve the American Dream. Thanks to my staff, CUNY Citizenship NOW and my City Council Colleagues for their hard work and dedication.”

Being the son of an immigrant from Russia and the grandson of immigrants from Austro-Hungary I am thrilled to see present day immigrants being helped as they seek citizenship and the rights of all Americans. Thank you Vanessa
