During American Diabetes Month The Children’s Hospital at Montefiore hosted a Candy Exchange for kids with diabetes where they were invited to bring the candy they gathered on Halloween and exchange it for gifts. The kids wore their Halloween costumes and enjoyed games, giveaways and activities as well as gathering educational information about how to live with and manage the condition.

Nurse practitioners and diabetes educators will talk about why limiting candy and eating nutritious foods are important.

Halloween is traditionally focused around candy and this, along with many other holidays throughout the year, can be a difficult time for kids with diabetes as they need to control their sugar intake. To make this a fun occasion and not all about what the kids can’t have, the division of Pediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes at CHAM hosted this event to gather the kids with their peers and make it about what they can do instead.
