On Monday, Nov. 17th at 5 p.m. NYC Council Member Andy King & Citizens Committee to distribute 300 reusable tote bags to commuters

In an effort to help the environment, NYC Council Member Andy King and Peter Kostmayer, CEO of Citizens Committee of New York, will be distributing 300 reusable tote bags to evening commuters on Monday, Nov. 17th at 5 p.m. at the IRT East 233rd Street/White Plains Road station, Bronx.

During the tote bag giveaway, Council Member King will gage constituents’ responses to using reusable bags when shopping and make them aware of the environmental and economic benefits of doing so.

On Wednesday, Nov. 19th, the City Council’s Committee on Sanitation and Solid Waste Management will hold a hearing on proposed legislation to reduce plastic bag waste in New York City.  Under Bill 209-2014, New York City stores would implement a minimum 10 cent charge for every single-use bag (paper or plastic). Store owners retain the charge. Customers who bring their own bags will not be charged. Council Member King, who is a member of the committee, will informally poll commuters’ response to bill during the bag giveaway.
