City Council Speaker Has Heart-to-Heart Chat With Bronx Youth

New York City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito visited the Northeast Bronx on November 19th, where she sat down and spoke with dozens of middle- and high school students in the Bronx Youth Empowerment Program (YEP) on Evander Childs Campus on East Gun Hill Rd.

Speaker Mark-Viverito spoke with the young people about today’s youth issues, such as teen smoking and lack of gym space in public schools, explaining that many City schools are not in compliance with state law requirements for exercise during school hours.

The Speaker also gave some personal accounts of the experiences that lead her to public life, as well as what the job of a council member is like on a daily basis.

The event was organized by Council Member Andy King, who co-founded YEP 9 years ago with his wife, Neva Shillingford-King.
