Electronic Waste Ban Starts January 2015

As of January 2015, it will be illegal to discard electronics in the trash or at the curb. The electronics covered by this New York State law include computers and their peripherals, televisions, fax machines, VCRs, DVD players, printers/scanners, video game consoles, MP3 players, tablets, and small servers. See nyc.gov/electronics for more information.

DSNY is sending a mailer to all New Yorkers that explains the electronics disposal ban and lists recycling options. Acceptable ways to recycle electronics are listed below.

ELECTRONICS RECYCLING OPTIONS

DSNY’s e-cycleNYC Program
Apartment buildings with more than 10 units can enroll for this free and convenient service to pick up and recycle unwanted electronics. Learn more at nyc.gov/ecycle.

Retail Drop-Off Programs
Drop off electronics (no purchase necessary) at Goodwill, Salvation Army, Best Buy, and Staples (no TVs), or at organizations, such as Gowanus E-waste warehouse. See Google map of NYC electronics drop-off locations.

Mail-Back Programs
Many brands offer take-back programs. Check your specific brand’s website for details.

Electronics Recycling Events
Bring electronics to e-waste recycling events held by organizations, such as Lower East Side Ecology Center, or to DSNY SAFE Disposal Events.

Donate or Sell Electronics
If they still work, you can donate or sell electronics. Visit nyc.gov/stuffexchange for options in your neighborhood.

HIGHLIGHT
Christmas Tree Recycling

Bring your tree to a designated city park January 10-11 for MulchFest. DSNY will also collect trees curbside for compost January 5-16. Be sure to remove ornaments and lights.
