The NYPD has made an arrest on Monday in the cold case murder of grandmother Evelyn Shapiro who was found dead by her family on June 26, 2012.

The suspect, 31-year-old Pia McQueen, a homeless drug addict, has been charged with second degree murder, burglary, and criminal possession of a weapon.

Shapiro’s Pelham Parkway Houses apartment was forcefully burglarized, in which she  was violently assaulted and left for dead.

Shapiro was an independent and well known resident in her community. Her tragic murder left many in complete shock, including Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr., who called her “a pillar.”

It is still unclear what new information led the NYPD to the arrest, but many in the community, and the Bronx at large, hope that justice reaches anyone who took park in this brutal murder of a beloved grandmother.
