Statement by Assemblyman Jeffrey Dinowitz on
The Passing of former Governor Mario Cuomo
Assemblyman Jeffrey Dinowitz, Chair, Bronx Democratic County Committee
Mario Cuomo will always be remembered as one of the great liberal leaders of our time. He was perhaps the leading voice of progressive politics during the Reagan Era. His speeches to the Democratic National Conventions were among the best and most inspiring speeches I have ever heard. His prophetic 1984 Tale of Two Cities speech would, unfortunately, be as applicable today as it was then. I campaigned for Mario Cuomo when he ran for Mayor and in each and every one of his campaigns for Governor. Little did I know when I worked in his first gubernatorial campaign in 1982 that many years later I would be an elected member of the New York State Assembly, serving while he was Governor. His belief that government can and should be a vehicle for good, to make life better everyone, especially for those most in need, is one which I share. His lifelong dedication to public service and his amazing legacy as one of New York’s greatest Governors will always live on. I offer my deepest condolences to the entire Cuomo family.
