Assemblyman Carl Heastie Declares Candidacy for Speaker

Assemblyman Carl Heastie of the 83rd Assembly District has declared his candidacy for Speaker of the New York State Assembly.

Assemblyman Heastie said:

“Over the past week, the New York State Assembly has faced a profound crisis of leadership. But our members have spoken loud and clear: it is time to begin a new chapter. A new leadership team must step forward to earn back the public’s trust. Voters deserve an Assembly that will not only fight for all New Yorkers, but will enact the type of lasting reforms that will increase accountability and transparency in our state government. Today, I am declaring my candidacy for Speaker of the New York State Assembly, and over the next two weeks, I look forward to sharing my vision for our state and this legislature with my colleagues from across New York.”

After Assemblyman Heastie’s declaration, several political leaders expressed their support for his candidacy. Assemblyman Victor Pichardo said, “I wholeheartedly support my friend and colleague Assemblymember Carl Heastie for Speaker of the NYS Assembly. He has demonstrated the ability to lead and build consensus throughout the Bronx and I am certain that he will do the same as Speaker. He will be a great speaker.”

Public Advocate, Letitia James expressed that Assemblyman Heastie is, “understated and humble. Those qualities will go a long way in this leadership position. I look forward to working with him.”

Mike Rendino, Vice Chair of the Bronx Republican Party said:

“Chairman Heastie is a born leader. His election as speaker of the assembly not only benefits the Bronx, but his finance and budget background would make him a valuable asset to the entire state. While as chairman of the opposition party, he has always kept the lines of communication open to a reasonable discussion that would benefit Bronx communities.”

If elected, he would be the first person of color to hold the position of Speaker of the New York State Assembly.
