NY Rising Community Reconstruction Program

The state is allocating millions of dollars to help protect waterfront communities, including those in the Bronx, from devastating storms like Superstorm Sandy.

Sandy ravaged several Bronx communities in 2012. To prevent a recurrence, the state is spending $3 million to improve preparedness.

The Locust Point Civic Association and the Edgewater Volunteer Firehouse will receive funding to make upgrades to their buildings, both of which serve as shelters and command centers during emergency and disaster situations.

Around $2 million will be set aside to examine more than 70 low-lying areas in the East Bronx. Special attention will be paid to Throgs Neck, Country Club and City Island.

“Rarely has there been an effort to kind of be proactive and … take millions of dollars to really be forward-thinking,” says John Doyle, a City Island resident who is a member of an East Bronx waterfront planning group. “We’re not going to wait for the next catastrophe.” Doyle says during Superstorm Sandy, an area near the island’s bridge was under water for several days.

Community leaders and lawmakers, such as State Sen. Jeff Klein (D-Bronx/Westchester), believe the funding will go a long way in making waterfront communities less vulnerable to storms.
